Atletico Ride luck to win after a late Elche penalty miss.

Atletico Madrid stayed in charge of La Liga’s four-way title ra’ce by earning a nerve-shred’ding 1-0 victory at strugg’ling Elche on past Saturday, riding their luck to the extre’me when the hosts missed a penalty in stop’page time.

Mar’cos Llorente scored the only goal with a defl’ected shot in the 23d minutes but gave away the penalty in the 90th after a care’less handball as Atleti defe’nded a free kick after sitting on their slim lead rath’er than look’ing to put the game to bed.

Elche midfie’lder Fidel Chaves’s spot kick beat goalk’eeper Jan Oblak but came off the post, prov’iding another twist in an action-packed game in which Atle’tico had 2 goals ruled out for offsi’de and a penalty award taken away follo’wing a VAR revi’ew.

Fidel’s spu’rned penalty thr’ew Diego Simeone’s side a lifel’ine in a thril’ling title race while leaving Elche still eighteen and in the relegatio’n zone.

They would have move’d out of the drop zone if Fide’l had score’d from the spot.

The win took Atlet’ico to seventy six points with four ga’mes left, five clear of 2nd placed Real Madr’id, who host Osas’una later on past Saturday,

and third-placed Barcelona, who visit Valen’cia on Sunday.

Sevill’a, on seventy points, host Athletic Bilba’o on Monday.

It was the second time this season Atleti had bene’fitted from their oppon’ents squande’ring a late penalty, with Obla’k saving from Alaves’ Joselu to secu re a 1-0 home win in March.
