Chelsea considering move for Cristiano Ronaldo
Chelsea are considering a m’ove for Cristiano Ronaldo amid the forward informing Manchester United he wants to leave the club this summer if a suitable offer arrives, The Athletic unde’rstands.
United currently insist Ron’aldo is not for sale and have reitera:that he is contracted until 20’23.
But the 37-year-old has ma’de clear his desire to depart a’nd did not return for pre-season training on Monday as scheduled, citi’ng family reasons.
The Athletic revealed last month that new Chelsea co-own’er Todd Boehly held a recent meeti’ng with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Men’des, where a switch to Chels”ea was among the subjects they dis’cussed.
It is believed conversa”tions between the pair have since continued, with Boehly an’d his fellow director Behdad Eghbali thought to be intrigued by” the concept of recruiting such an iconic figure.
There will be numerous fac’tors for Chelsea to consider if the id’ea becomes a genuine possi’bility and although finances are n’ot a likely impediment, the wishes of boss Thomas Tuchel woul”d be key.
The head coach is a lo’ng-term admirer of Ronaldo bu’t any decision on whether to si’gn him would require Tuchel’s ble’ssing and dialogue between th’e German trainer and Portugal in’ternational on how he might fit into Chelsea’s system and style.
Whether United’s sta’nce will change, and even then their willingness to do bus’iness with a direct rival, is uncl’ear.
But the prospect has not be’en ruled out by the Stamford Bri’dge hierarchy and they are sa’id to be monitoring the situat’ion.
