Cristiano Ronaldo shows his class when targeted by pitch invaders during Portugal draw in Ireland
The Manchester Unit’ed star was in action for Portugal in Dub’lin, missing a late head’er to claim all three points.
Cristiano Ronal’do proved his class once again by emb’racing a young pitch invader a’fter Portugal’s goalless draw ‘with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Thursday night.
Manchester United for’ward Ronaldo was unab’le to help his side past Stephen Ken’ny’s resilient Ireland but it wo’n’t do much to harm Portugal’s ch’ances of qualifying for the 20’22 World Cup in Qatar.
Portugal are alre’ady in the hat for next year’s tourna’ment and are battling it out with S’erbia to finish top of Group A, wh’ich also contains Luxe’mbourg and Azerbaijan as w’ell as Ireland.
A video clip that w’ent viral after the game sho’wed a pi’tch invader make a bee-line for Ronaldo who gave the little gir’l a hug and his shirt from the ma’tch.
According to th’e Irish Mirror, Cristiano was gr’eeted by a separate pitch inv’ader during the game.
The incident was ‘not broadcast on RTE, the Irish br’oadcaster showing the ga’me, but pictures emerged of the i’ncident afterwards.
The invader got close to Ro’naldo before stewards could in’tervene and they escorted the f’an, who managed to sh’ake the superstar’s hand, off the pi’tch.
Ronaldo and Portu’gal had to play the last ten min’utes of the World Cup qualifier wi’th ten men because Pepe w’as sent off for fouling Callum Ro’binson, earning himself a second yel’low card.
Ronaldo almost snatc’hed a late winner when, 6 minutes into injury time, he saw an effo’rt from young Ireland goalkee’per Gavin Bazunu blo’cked.
Bazunu, on loan at Por’tsmouth from Manchester City, wa’nted Ronaldo’s shirt after the ga’me but was forced to watch hi’m lose out to the young pitch inv’ader.
