Jamie Carragher has summed up Jadon Sancho’s rather underwhelming first season at Manchester United.
The former Liverpool defender picked the winger as his one to watch when giving his 2021/22 predictions back in August. Mid-way through the season, he explained that his choice indicated which player he was most interested in seeing fare in the Premier League, rather than who he thought would shine.
But many did expect Sancho to live up to his £73m summer price tag at Old Trafford after stellar seasons in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. However, he has endured an inconsistent debut campaign amid a horrid period for United.
His return of five goals and three assists in 38 appearances this term has left many supporters feeling deflated. They will expect more from Sancho next season, especially under a new manager who historically has favoured youngsters in his teams.
Carragher said he will be keeping a keen eye on the England international amidst Erik ten Hag’s arrival. Speaking on Sky Sports when reviewing his predictions on Monday, he said: “Listen, I don’t want to be critical of one to watch Jadon Sancho.
“It was more, he had great numbers in the Bundesliga, I was keen to see. It hasn’t gone as well as he’d like but you’re hoping there’s more from him. He showed glimpses in the second half of the season, it’ll be interesting how he does next season.”
