Manchester United explain Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo penalty decision

Man Utd were beate’n by Aston Villa in the Pre’mier Leag’ue at Old Trafford and Bruno Fern’andes missed an inju’ry-time pe’nalty to rescue a point.

Ole Gunnar Solsk’jaer beli’eves his penalty options are unp’aralleled in world football despite seeing Bruno Fernandes blaze over the crossbar against Ast’on Villa.

United were awa’rded a st’oppage-time penalty to res’cue a point against Villa, but Fern’andes took the spot-kick ah’ead of Cristiano Ronaldo and coul’d only find the Stretford End.

Fernandes has score’d 21 of his previous 22 pena’lties for United and has esta’blished a reputation as a reliable pen’alty taker since arriving at Old Tra’fford, but Ronaldo has been the pen”alty taker for Real Ma’drid and Juventus and had been expected to resume duties at Unit’ed since returning to the club.

Fernandes has sco’red 21 of his previous 22 penalties for United and has establ’ished a reputation as a reliable pen’alty taker since arriving at Old Trafford, but Ronaldo has been the pe’nalty taker for Real Mad’rid and Juventus and had b’een expected to resume duties at Unit’ed since returning to the club.

But when Un’ited were fin’ally given a chance from 12 yards it was Fernandes who mai’ntained duties, a decisi’on Solskjaer said was made before the ma’tch. Just minutes after Kortney Hau’se had given Villa the le’ad Ferna’ndes missed the pena’lty and Ronaldo was the first player down the tunnel at the fi’nal whistle.

Bruno has been exce’llent and Cristiano is proba’bly the one who has scored the most penalt’ies in world football. It is just a missed opportunity to get a point,” said Solskjaer.

You will be maki’ng all these assumptions on the reactions of players. Bruno is such a good penalty take’r and you would back him with your mort’gage. What I don’t like is how they [Villa players] crow’ded the referee and the pen’alty s’pot. They got what they wanted.”

Fernandes had been alm’ost faultless from the spot for United since joining from Spor’ting Lisbon in January 2020 and Sol’skjaer has backed him to ste’p up ag’ain despite his miss, although Ronaldo is probably going to expect a greater say the ne’xt time United get a penalty.

“That is footb’all, he will step forward eve’ry day of the week for the club and the team and sometimes it just does’n’t go your way, that is part and parcel of what we are doing. It is such a fine line between heav’en and hell,” he said.
