One day we are perfect, the next we’re crap’: Ronaldo’s blunt message after Utd’s big rebound

Cristiano Ronaldo finally ope’ned up on Manches’ter Uni’ted’s ‘tough week’ after ‘scor’ing and assisting in a 3-0 win over Tottenham as the Red Devi’ls rebou’nded from a humili:ating 5-0 def:eat to Liverpool.

Coach Ole Gunnar Sols’kjaer’s job was in serious do’ubt following the thrash’ing at O’ld Trafford, before turning thi’ngs around with a pair of key tactical chan’ges. The first was pairing Ron’aldo and Edinson Cavani up fro:nt together for the 1st time. The duo, with a comb’ined age of 70, both scored.

And Ronaldo delive’red a blunt message to cri’tics after an ‘unbelievable perfor’mance’, saying he’s us’ed to the criticism and that he ‘kne’w that we would answer’ after the Live’rpool drubbing.

We knew before the gam’e that we had a tough week,” Ron’aldo told Sky Sports.

“We had res’ults t’hat we didn’t expect, the team’ was under pressure and a littl’e bit sad, but we knew today tha’t we would answer. We pla’yed good. My job is to help the te’am with my experience, go’als, assists and I did today – feel so plea’sed for that.

“In terms of the tea’m, it was an unbelievable per’formance. I hope this time we chan’ged the page. It’s not only the coa’ch that many people point ou’t, it’s the players as well. I believe th’at something happened for a reas’on and we have to be happy thi’s afternoon.

“It’s normal [critic’ism], the club is so big. The critici’sm is so big, it is always there. It doe’sn’t bother me, I know that one da’y we are perfect and another da’y we are crap. Sometimes lif’e is li’ke that and we have to pass throu’gh the bad moments.”

Solskjaer didn’t sh’y away from the hurt of last week’end’s record home defeat to the’ir bitter rivals.

“That’s always goi’ng to be in the history books – one of th’e darkest days. A dark spot o’n our CV,” added Solsk’jaer.

“We’ve got a har”d week again. Champions Leag’ue game then (Manchester) City. We’ve got to digest this 1 an’d be ready for Tuesday (against Atalanta).”

A switch to a back 3, aided by the return of Raphael Vara’ne from injury, also help’ed Solskjaer’s men register just a seco’nd clean sheet in 22 games.

“We’ve built this perfor’mance on hard work, discip’line and keeping the ball away ‘from our goal,” said Solskjaer.

“We worked on thi’s this week. The boys were brilli’ant, they took it on board. “Rap’hael Vara’ne is a top player. He reads the ‘gam’e well. He’s quick a’nd so experienced. To get him bac

Ck is massive for us.”

The signings of Ron’aldo, Varane and Jadon Sanc’ho were expected to turn Unit’ed into title challengers this sea’son.

Instead, they are 8 points adrift of Premier League lead’ers Chelsea after 10 games, but did move up to fifth thanks to a 1st league win in five games.

The impact of Rona’ldo’s arrival on the balance of the te’am has been questioned. But ther’e is little doubting the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner’s finishi’ng as he volleyed in his seven’th goal in 11 games since returning to the club, to settle United’s nerves.

Ronaldo then turn’ed provider for Cavani to double Uni’ted’s lead with a deft chip o’ver Hugo Lloris in the seco”nd period.

“The experience cam’e through,” said Solsk’jaer. “I was told that’s the oldest team I’ve pi’cked for Man Utd and it w’as time for it.

“I’ve been here three years and Tuesday’s training perf’ormance by Edinson Ca’vani was the best training perfor’mance anyone has put in here.

“They played well t’ogether, they have loads of res’pect for each other. We have lo’ads of talented players but they ha’ve to learn from those 2. The work rate they put in, the quality they put in is second to non’e.
