Solskjaer, Schweinsteiger & Owen insist referee wronged Ronaldo
While Cristiano Ronaldo scored again for Manc’hester United at the weekend, the referee’s pen’alty decisions argu’ably cost him a chan’ce to add to his tally.
Ole Gu’nnar Solskjaer, Bastian Schwein’steiger, and Mic’hael Owen can’not under’stand how Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t awa’rded a penalty at West Ham.
Ronaldo made it four goals in 3 games back at Manchester United by sco’ring a first-half equ’alizer to help the Red Devils nick a 2-1 come’back vict’ory over West Ham on Sunday.
But ref’eree, Martin Atki’nson, denied the 5 Ballon d’Or winner 3 penalty appe’als.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2 clear penalty misses
#1 The Coufal incid’ent
The first one came when CR7 collid”ed w’ith the West Ham right-back Vladi’mir Couf’al inside the box. There was clear contact, althoug’h not enough to convince Atkinson to aw’ard a spot-kick.
#2 The Zou’ma 1.
The second one, mean’while, was even stranger. Kurt Zouma’s chall’enge in’side the box took Cristiano Ronaldo down late on. The defender had no contact with the ball, a clear penalty right? Think again. Atkin’son didn’t point to the spot or chec’k the VAR replays.
Of cou’rse, it’s not the first time Atkinson has den’ied Ronaldo a pen’alty. The ref prev’iously did it an FA Cup quarter-final de’feat to Portsmouth in 2008, which left him on Sir Alex Ferg’uson’s bad books.
Ironi’cally, Atki’nson even’tually gave a spot-kick to West Ham only for Dav’id de Gea to thw’art Mark Noble’s eff’ort.
What did Solsk’jaer say?
Spea’king to Sky Spo’rts after the match, the Red Devils said: “The first one and the third one, I think they are stone’wall and you can’t even arg’ue aga’inst them. The first one, the lad puts his foot out and Cristia’no runs str’aight.
“The last one, Paul [Pogba] had a foul aga’inst him – Kurt Zou’ma. He did not touch him, but he went over him. So why is Cristiano’s 3rd appeal not a pen’alty?
“I hope it won’t be ‘Cristiano is never going to get a penalty.’”
